Detailed Itinerary

The Adventure

Samarkand and Bukhara are the most celebrated oases on the Silk Road.
Embellished with some short walks, this discovery trip of a mysterious past permits us to establish our first contact with the magic of central Asia where the big Khans have reigned as uncontested masters throughout the centuries.
Our steps lead us to Taragay Village, village of the father of Timur, the famous conqueror who mounted the throne at Samarkand in 1369.
The last days of our trip are devoted to this city and it's architectural wonders.

Itinerary

Day 1/  Arrival in Tashkent
Meeting/assisting at Tashkent airport. Overnight in a 4 star hotel.

Day 2/  Tachkent-Bukhara
After breakfast, visit the capital:  the Tchorsu Bazar, the Koukeldash (XVI) Madrasah (school), the Khasti Imam (XVI) complex, lunch along the way, afternoon visit of the Applied Arts Museum.  End of afternoon transfer to the airport and flight to Bukhara. Transfer to a charming guest house for three nights.

Day 3, 4/  Bukhara the Sainte, visit
This city which is situated in the Zerafshan valley has always kept it's authentic charm.  It was one of the most important cities on the Silk Road where all of the traders rushed to sell their merchandise, notably rugs and jewelry.  Although Islam was born elsewhere, Bukhara was a notable center for the development of this religion.  The city shelters hundreds of Islamic schools, the Madrasah, and as many mosques and saint's graves. The historic centre of Bukhara and its monuments are classified as an Unesco World Heritage: the Ark, the Citadelle (1-IV), Po-i Kalyan complex (XV-XVI), Kosh madrasah of Ulughbek and Abdul Aziz Khan madrasah (XV-XVII), the Labi-Khouse complex (XVI-XVII) evoke the medieval centuries.

Day 5/  Bukhara-Nourata
We leave Bukhara to reach Nourata (93 miles).
A large oasis sustained by the sacred source of Tchashma and it's sacred fish. We will also discover the ruins of a fortress that existed at the time of Alexander the Great and which is shaped like the Big Bear Constellation.  We then discover the Tchil-Ustun Mosque (forty columns-XIV), the Panjvakhta Mosque (five prayers-XVI), the Mausoleum of the Sheik Abdoul Hasan Nouri (VIII) and finally the Kariz, which is the ancient irrigation system in the desert.
On the way, we will stop in the city of Gijdouvon to visit a ceramic workshop. Night at a locals.

Day 6/  Nourata - Kizil Koum - Forige
From Nourata, we take the road going towards the north east (124 miles) to join up with the big Aoul (a nomadic village, settled by the Bolshevik Russians).  Arrival at noon. In the afternoon, we take a walk along Lake Haydarkoul. Meet the fishermen, swim (depending on the season).  At the end of the day, road for the mountain village of Forige:  Paris in Usbek.  Timur gave famous city names from across the world to the villages around Samarkand because he wanted his capital to dominate the world.  Meet the mountain people of Uzbek. Night at a locals.

Day 7/  Forige - Norvon - Tepakul

Hiking day. From the Bogdon Village, we cross a pass (5,633 feet) to descend into the Norvon Valley.  Green valley with many gardens, vines and walnut trees.  At the end of the afternoon, road in direction of the south-east towards the Zerashan mountain.  Arrive at the end of the day at Tepakul Village. Night at a locals.
4-5 H walk.

Day 8/  Tepakul - Taragay
Very early, we begin our trek towards Langar Pass (7,218 feet) from which we dominate the plains of Samarkand and the Kashgadaria Valley.  From here, we admire the snowy peaks of Pamir.  Picnic on the pass.  Descend towards Taragay, birth place of Timur's  father. We can soak in the unusual ambiance, the rural architecture and the pituresque landscapes.  Shared evening with the villagers. Night at a locals.
6-7 H walk.

Day 9/  Taragay - Shakhrisabz - Ayoqchi
Depart by vehicle in the morning for Shakhrisabz, the ancient Kesh, birth place of Timur.
This last edifies the immense « white palace » Ak-Saray (XIV) of which the impressive relicts of the portals offer a ceramic decor without parallel.
The Kok-Goumbaz Mosque (XV), the Gambazi-Saydon Mausoleum and, above all, the Khazrati Imam Mosque complete the souvenirs of splendor of this city.  After visiting Shakhrisabz, we then take the road for the mountains of Zerafshan.  Arrival at Ayoqchi Village where the Tajiks and the Uzbeks co-habitate.  Meet with the villagers who are breeders and agriculturers. Night at a locals.

Day 10/  Ayoqchi - Tersak - Samarkand

In the morning, our hike follows the length of the river, towards the east.  The goal is to reach Takhra Karatcha Pass (6,234 feet) where we will be rewarded with a panoramic view onto Samarkand.  The name of this pass translates « Mountain of the Eagles ».  Meet with the shepherds and the mountain men who cultivate potatoes in these highlands.  Picnic on the pass.  The second stage of the day continues by the descent into the Tersak Valley with a hilly landscape.  Arrival in the village where our minibus awaits us.  Immediate transfer to Samarcande (28 miles). Night in guest house. 7-8 H walk (easy)

Day 11/  Samarkand the Grande. Visit
Capital of Timur, this city was the principal city of ancient Sogdiane.  At the crossroads of the large commercial routes coming in from China, Siberia, Persia and the West, Samarkand  prospered up until the surge of Ghengis Khan's Mongolian hordes who destroyed the city before reconstructing it on the ashes of the suburbs.  Samarkand's hour of glory came two centuries later, as soon as Timur declare it the capital of his empire. The marvelous madrasah of Reguistan (XV-XVII), decorated in dazzling ceramic allow us to better understand the multiple influences which marked the Timuride architectural evolution.  After the famous Bibi Khanum Mosque, it is the fame of the Timurides that we will celebrate in front of the Shakhi-Zinda Mausoleum.  Next to the Roukhabad Mausoleum, rises the Gour-Emir, tomb of the great conquerors which conserves the corpses of Timur, the corpses of his children and his grand children.  In the evening, we will attend the « Sound and Light » spectacle at Reghistan Plaza.  Night at guest house of charm.

Day 12/  Samarkand-Tashkent
In the morning, we visit the Samarkand Museum which sums up the strong history of Central Asia.  After, the Oulougbek Observatory (XV) built onto Mount Kouhak. Here, we call up the fascinating personality of Timur's grandson, sovereign poet, philospher and astronomer.
Departure to Tachkent (train or bus, depending on the time).  Along the way, discover two different regions of Uzbekistan:  Djizak and Syr-Darya which were previously steppes that the Soviets transformed into cotton fields. We cross a second large river which is the Syr-Darya.  Arrival in the evening at Tachkent. Night and dinner at 4 star hotel.

Day 13/  Depart fom Tashkent
Transfer to the airport to check in for your return flight home.

Lodging

Tashkent:  4 star hotels (the local standard), based on double occupancy.
At all times possible, we favor nights in charming guest houses, traditional lodging, private and comfortable, with private bathrooms (shower and hot water), based on double occupancy.
This lodging, where the service and welcome are warm, enhances our contact with the locals. A guest house is equivalent to a Bed and Breakfast: large, plush house, equipped with several rooms.
In the shadowed courtyard, in the shelter of the strong, hot summers, you will find le charpoi, a kind of stand set up with pillows and rugs where one sits to enjoy tea and meals while conversing peacefully.
At a locals:  the large, principal room of the house where the guests are received, serves, after the meal, as a dormitory for all participants.  Excellent contact with the welcoming family.  Nights at locals offer basic comfort, but a strong contact with the local population.
Due to our goal of providing quality accommodations, we seek charming and reputable places located in the middle of the most beautiful landscapes, on the most beautiful view-points or close to the departure of the excursions.
We choose these hotels and pensions, not only for the excellent price/quality ratio, but also for their cordiality and hospitality.
The names of accommodations (hotels, pensions, etc...) when they are indicated, are only indicative.
Depending on availability, accommodations (hotels, pensions, etc...) may be replaced by another equivalent type.
It is possible that accommodations may change without prior notice due to a number of factors.

Food and Beverages

In the villages that we stop at during transfers:  meals in restaurant.
In the cities: prepared meals at the guest house or in the hotel's restaurant.
At a local's: meals are prepared by a cook and their aids based on local products.
Drinks: mineral water is furnished, as well as tea.
In Uzbekistan, the food is good, varied and copious. The meals are composed of fresh vegetables (cucumbers, tomatoes, etc...) meat (sheep, chicken, grilled, etc....) and dairy products.  Very flavorful. The food can be, however, a bit spicey.
