Detailed Itinerary
The Adventure
Unforgettable, dreamy single track descents......
Itinerary
Upon your arrival at Geneva airport, welcome and transfer to your hotel in Chamonix. Presentation of upcoming program and itinerary. Preparation of mountain bikes, trial runs. Night at the Vallee Blanche Hotel ***, situated in the heart of Chamonix.
Day 2/ Geneva - Chamonix - Lavancher - Balme Pass - Trient (SWITZERLAND)
We depart on our bikes from Chamonix, at the foot of the majestic Mont Blanc. We head deep into the valley which takes us to Tour Village, while passing by the foot of the moraine of the Argentiere glacier. From the balcony path in the forest, we see appear the massif of the Aiguilles Rouges, some 6,500 feet higher up. From this standpoint, we still feel quite small.....
Arriving at the hamlet of Tour, we take the Balme cable car which propels us up to Balme pass, some 3,937 feet higher up. A short, but intense effort allows us to reach the little pass of Croix de Fer, which allows us a magnificent descent crossing the alpine pastures and then a forest full of larch and spruce trees.
Night in ** hotel.
Distance traveled: approximately 19 miles
Altitude gain: 1,968 feet
Day 3/ Trient - La Forclaz Pass - Champex - La Fouly
Heading toward the Trient glacier by way of a small paved road that is unaccessible to cars. A short porterage and, there you have it, we are at the foot of the impressive glacier. We then follow the running water and the "bisses", little irrigation canals which also transport ice (you will better understand when you see them!) We reach the Trient pass. The view opens up onto Martigny and the Rhone plains. Long descent into the valley by way of a small trail which passes by typical, Alpine-Swiss chalets. We then start a long climb back up, alternating between paths and small roads with very little traffic, up to Champel. The chalets look like pictures on post cards.....We pass along the shores of Champel's cute, little lake and then a superb technical descent through forest to rejoin Val Ferret. We climb back up by way of a balcony path lined by the Dranse river banks. What beautiful views of the small bell tower in Portalet. Arrival in Fouly 5,250 feet, a small resort at the foot of the Tour Noir and the Grande Lui. Settle in at the hotel for a meal and a good night sleep.
Night in ** hotel.
Distance traveled: approximately 34 miles
Altitude gain: 5,906 feet
Day 4/ La Fouly - Grand Col Ferret - Courmayeur (ITALY) - Seigne Pass (FRANCE) - Chapieux
This morning, we depart Fouly in the direction of the hamlet of Ferret, while crossing the alpine pastures under the imposing mass of Mont Dolent. From Ferret, we climb back up a slope which allows us to rejoin the alpine pastures of Peule, summer residence of the celebrated queens of the Herens race (traditional black cows, very popular for fighting. From Peule, we follow the touring path of the Mont Blanc to rejoin Ferret pass which borders Switzerland and Italy, garded by the magnificent Niddle of Triolet. An demanding climb, but entirely feasible on mountain bike ! And then the beautiful techincal descent to the Helena refuge, before to start a long, rolling descent onto Courmayeur. The ripped form of the myth-like Grandes Jorasses appears.....
From the suburb of Courmayeur begins a long climb back up to the Seigne pass. Narrow road, slope and pathway succed one another to reach the longest porterage of our trek which arrives at the Seigne pass (approximately 30 minutes of porterage). Unobstructed view on the glaciers the entire way up our climb....
At our arrival, superb panorama onto the Niddle of Tre la Tete and its sharp surroundings which make us forget our efforts....
From the Seigne pass, sumptuous single track descent onto Chapieux valley, and the glacier city, which carries the name of the « Aiguille des Glaciers » summit dominating over it. We are at an altitude between summer alpine pastures and the rock and glaciers of the high mountains.
Night in « mountain gite » (type of bed and breakfast).
Distance traveled: approximately 31 miles
Altitude gain: 7,218 feet
Day 5/ Chapieux - Cormet of Roselend - Roselend Lake - La Gitte
We climb to the Cornet of Roselend by these last 3 miles of road ....to a concert of cow bells (Tarines and Abondances cows, these are the certified cows that make the famous Beaufort cheese).
From Cormet, a technical traverse permits us to stay in the same altitude range amidst the alpine pastures before diving, by way of a technical path, into the Plan de la Laie valley. From here, we start our integral tour of Roseland Lake : we take on some altitude by way of an alpine slope and then a steep balcony path above the lake before following the banks of the lake to join the Roseland dam. We leave Roseland Lake and it's emerald waters to climb the short Sur Fretes pass from where appears the enchanting Gitte valley: alpine pastures, river torrents, the abrupt surrounding summits...
Night in « mountain gite » (type of bed and breakfast) in an idyllic setting.
Distance traveled: approximately 28 miles
Altitude gain: 5,577 feet
Day 6/ La Gitte - Gitte Pass - Joly Pass - Contamines
From our haven of peace, we leave to ascend the Gitte pass by way of a superb slope with a multitude of switchbacks. A short porterage (or better yet, « pushing the bike»), and there we are at the Gitte pass: superb 360 degree panorama on the Alps: les Aravis, le Beaufortain, les Bauges and, of course, the Mont Blanc massif. A magnificent single track descent awaits us to join the Joly pass. A new, unobstructed view of Mont Blanc....Descent on les Contamines while crossing the alpine pastures and then forest. Passage to a pretty roman bridge before taking on a bit more altitude in underbrush which presents to us a new single track leading us to Contamines....beautiful paths alternating between the depths of the valley and the balconies await us before we reach Contamines ski resort, nestle at the foot of the abrupt mountains and glaciers.
Distance traveled: approximately 28 miles
Altitude gain: 4,921 feet
Day 7/ Les Contamines - Saint Gervais - Les Houches - Chamonix
We reach Saint Gervais by following the valley of Bon Nant and it's multitude of traditional chalets. In Saint Gervais, we begin our last ascension of the week to go over our last obstacle, which will separate us from the valley of Chamonix. Another beautiful descent in underbrush which we savor until Houches. Passage in front of the Bossons glacier to rejoin Chamonix where we arrive in the beginning of the afternoon. Visit of Chamonix.
Night in *** hotel.
Distance traveled : approximately 22 miles Altitude gain: 3,937 feet
Day 8/ Transfer to airport for return trip home
Transfer to Geneva airport according to the departure time of your flight. Return flight home.

Health and First Aid
Health hazards
- Heat: protect your eyes and your skin against the sun, as it is more intense with altitude.
- Cold: plan on packing protective clothing against the cold (jackets, fleece, gloves, hat), especially in relevance to the activity.
- Dehydration: drink and nourish yourself sufficiently and correctly throughout the effort.
- Small wounds: blisters, tendonitis...bring along band aids, an antiseptic and another cream for muscle aches. They will take up a bit of room, but well worth the space.
Altitude sickness
can be felt at around 8,000 feet and above and can come on quickly (after just one night spent in altitude). Hard to predict and varies completely from one person to another. Good hydration is necessary, progressive altitude acclimatization and Aspirin can all help in preventing the unpleasant side effects of altitude sickness.
