Detailed Itinerary

The Adventure

Between Mexico City and the Pacific coast, pre Colombian civilizations have left monumental traces of their passage in history. Old Tenochtitlan, now Mexico, was once the capital of the Aztec country.  We visit the remains of the very beautiful archeological site of Teotihuacan with its two sacred Sun and Moon pyramids. Then, direction to the south towards the charming colonial city of Puebla.  We walk in the middle of two beautiful volcanoes, Popocatepetl (17,881feet high and active) and Iztacihuatl (17,224 feet active as well).
Further south, the decor changes.  Here we discover the state of Oaxaca and the beautiful site of Monte Alban, which was the cradle of the Zapotec civilization which had a flourishing empire even before the beginning of our era.
The ecosystems encountered during our excursions are extremely varied.  Whether at the foot of the volcanoes, walking in the middle of cacti or in the pine forest of the Sierra, we end at the superb beaches on the shores of the Pacific ocean. Hikes alternate between remarkable archeological sites, beautiful colonial cities and authentic villages.... The richness of this pre-Colombian past and the beauty of its landscapes, without forgetting its colorful hikes, are fascinating for the traveler and introduce one to the thousands of Zapotec and Aztec customs.

Itinerary

Day 1/  Arrival in Mexico
Upon your arrival at Mexico City airport, reception by the guide and transfer by taxi towards the hotel. Presentation of the course of stay and visit of Mexico City (depending on planned arrival time of participants). Hotel (2 nights), 5 stars, Emporio Reforma (or similar).

Day 2/  Teotihuacan (Aztec site) - Mexico
In the morning, a walking tour of the extraordinary Teotihuacan Aztec site and ascent of its famous pyramids. Back to Mexico City, visiting the colonial downtown around the "Zócalo" (central plaza). Built in the sixteenth century on the Tenochtitlan ruins, the ancient Aztec capital of Mexico City, has many colonial buildings as well as Aztec temples temple ruins. Hotel.

Day 3/  Mexico - Amecameca - Hiking Paso de Cortés (12,303 feet) - Puebla
Transfer to the town of Amecameca and on the road towards the foot of Popocatépetl (17,881 feet), Mexico's most dominating and famous, currently active volcano (therefore, we will, perhaps, witness its summit covered by a flair of ashes) and its neighbor, Iztaccihuatl at 17,224 feet. At Paso de Cortes, the pass between the two volcanoes, we leave for a hike toward the Izta refuge. Magnificent view of the volcanoes. Back to the vehicle and transfer to Puebla, one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Mexico (UNESCO World Heritage Site): a magnificent Zócalo, more than 60 churches and a very original architecture with many red brick and ceramic facades. Visit of the city. Free evening and night at the hotel (Hotel del Portal, or similar), 4 stars.
3 H walk. Ascent: 820 feet - Descent: 820 feet.

Day 4/  Puebla - The Cactus Forest - Oaxaca
Road Puebla to Oaxaca. We gradually depart from the volcanic zone to reach rolling hills and mountain landscapes. Midway, we traverse a very large cacti forest. Pause and then a beautiful, wild hike in the middle of all sizes and various forms of cacti: tall and willowy like candles, low and bulging like barrels or branching off... The trail is rocky, often hot, but it is really worth it! We arrive in the protected temple of the ancient pre-Hispanic Popolocas civilization. A very intense moment!
Arrival in Oaxaca.  Settle in at the hotel, Hostal de la Noria (or similar). Visit the historic center of this beautiful colonial city, also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 5/  Monte Alban - Communaute of San Felipe del Agua
Early in the morning, walking tour of the Monte Alban site, the ancient Zapotec capital, located on a vast artificial plateau at the top of a hill where the view encompasses the entire valley of Oaxaca and its pleasant mountains. Remains of many grandiose palaces, temples and homes: the city had up to 35000 people!
Short transfer to San Felipe and a walk in semi-tropical vegetation and forests of pine which lead us up to 3 small waterfalls.
Meal in a Hacienda and then return to Oaxaca, Hostal de la Noria (or similar). Free end of the afternoon and night at the hotel.
Approx. 4 H walk.  Very little altitude gain.

Day 6/  Hierve el Agua - Mitla - Oaxaca
Short) transfer and short hike in the spectacular Hierve El Agua Park site (verbatim: boiling water). At this location, highly mineralized, bubling water comes down from the mountain and then crosses a small rock cliff. The deposited minerals have formed, in the long run, stunning, petrified waterfalls. Very nice view of the valley and the surrounding mountains with the possibility of swimming.... (3 H 30 walk and bathing).
Then transfer and visit of Mitla, the Zapotec site, which retains the most beautiful pre- Colombian Mexican "stone mosaic". Visit the Tree del Tule, one of the largest and oldest trees in the world.

Tacos can be prepared in many ways.  Among the most popular are tacos "al pastor" which are prepared with spicy sheep meat. There are also enchiladas, tamales, quesadillas and sincronizadas (wheat flower quesadillas). No vaccine is obligatory.
We advise you, however, to be up date for traditional vaccinations: Diphtheria - Tetanus - Poliomyelitis, Typhoid fever. Vaccination against hepatitis A and B is recommended.

Health hazards

- Heat: protect your eyes and your skin against the sun, as it is more intense with altitude.
- Cold: plan on packing protective clothing against the cold (jackets, fleece, gloves, hat), especially in relevance to the activity.
- Dehydration: drink and nourish yourself sufficiently and correctly throughout the effort.
- Small wounds: blisters, tendonitis...bring along band aids, an antiseptic and another cream for muscle aches. They will take up a bit of room, but well worth the space.

Altitude sickness

Can be felt at around 8,000 feet and above and can come on quickly (after just one night spent in altitude). Hard to predict and varies completely from one person to another. Good hydration is necessary, progressive altitude acclimatization and Aspirin can all help in preventing the unpleasant side effects of altitude sickness.
